It is a legal requirement for vehicles 3 years or older in the UK to have an annual safety check - The Ministry of Transport test, more commonly known as the MoT Test. The purpose of the MoT test is to ensure that your vehicle meets the minimum safety level required by law.
Ferris Bros offers MOT testing from £35.00 via local DVSA approved MOT test stations.
The MOT Test should not be confused with Servicing your vehicle. To ensure you car will continue to be safe & reliable, see the adjacent section on Servicing.
Information on Expiry Date & Early Testing
It is assumed by many people that they have 14 days 'grace' after their MOT test Certificate expires to obtain a renewal - This is not the case.
However, the MOT test regulations do make the provision for early testing by up to a calendar month to ease the renwal process. This means for example, that if your current Certificate is due to expire on say, 14th August your vehicle could be tested from 14th July and on passing the test, the new Certificate would be dated to expire on 14th August in the next year. Further Info on MOT testing
During the MoT test the nominated tester, a person authorised by the the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) will conduct an inspection and a series of checks around the vehicle, including the interior, exterior, under the bonnet and under the vehicle. The result of each check is recorded - if the vehicle passes a VT20 ‘pass’ certificate is issued.
Please note the Pass/Fail criteria refer only to the items nominated for inspection by the DVSA and their condition at the time of test only. This is the minimum standard only hence it is advisable to combine an MOT Test with a Service at all times.
If the vehicle fails to meet the required standard a VT30 ‘failure’ document is issued. Items that are not quite a failure, but worthy of record by the tester are noted on an an ‘advisory’ sheet (VT32W).
It is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is examined every 12 months. Without a current MoT certificate, you will be unable to drive your vehicle lawfully or renew your road fund license. The computerisation of the MoT testing system by DVSA means police and mobile camera units can now check remotely to see if your vehicle has a current MoT Certificate.
The penalty for not having an up to date MoT certificate could be a fine. Also if the vehicle is involved in an accident you may be asked to produce your MOT certificate. An insurance claim could be affected by the absence of your MOT, especially in the case of injury.
